Marine Life Protection

A BP drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers and sending millions of gallons of oil into the water. The oil is beginning to kill wildlife and cripple the tourism and fishing industries. I wish seals, and all marine lifes, around the Gulf of Mexico could get through this difficult moment.

Don’t Cry for Me, Barcelona

To Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Earthquake in Haiti (Jan 12, 2010)

lovechinaOn May 12, 2008, an earthquake of 8 magnitude struck in Sichuan. Everyone in China was shocked, and quickly became heartbroken as reported deaths climbed from 10,000 to 32,000 to more than 62,000 people. The death toll is still rising, and the number of injured and missing is many times more.

The Chinese people faced this disaster with compassion and courage. I was touched by the teacher who died forming a bridge with his body between two desks, protecting four surviving students under him, by the trapped child who told the rescue workers to save others first, and by the dying mother who texted her baby, "My Treasure: If you survive, always remember I love you." She died using her own body to shield her 3-month-old from harm. But don’t worry about this baby growing up without a family. Thousands of families in China have already volunteered to adopt earthquake orphans.  wenchuan earthquake

A brave executive took his weekend SUV, drove hundreds of miles, started digging, and saved several lives. A child used his hands to dig out two fellow students. His hands were severely injured, but his friends survived. Cab drivers turned their cars into ambulances and delivery trucks. More than 100,000 brave soldiers risked (and some gave) their lives to find every survivor.

At Google China, where I work, one team worked all night and built a "lost loved one" search to accurately find information about missing people in Sichuan. Another team put together a satellite image map to help the rescue effort, and to connect supply donors with rescue areas in need. Finally, a team made sure that when a user searched for "earthquake donations" or similar words, he or she could complete a donation in as little as one minute. Almost $1 million was donated in one week.

半旗These are the heroes among us, whether they use an SUV, a shovel, a phone or a keyboard. Their heroic deeds and selflessness inspired me so deeply that I can recall only one other such occasion. It was 9/11 – I vividly remember the NYPD police officers, the firefighters, and of course the passengers and crew on United Flight 93.

As a Chinese American, I hope that the Chinese and the Americans will see that they have so much in common – their compassion, courage, ingenuity, generosity and grace. Amid recent differences between China and America, I hope that people will see that these heroic commonalities are much stronger than any differences, and will bind the two great peoples together. And I hope that these heroes from 9/11 and 5/12 will inspire all of us to turn our anxiety into courage, our misery into tenacity, and our sorrow into love.

BlackStorm

logo (黑莓)  is a mobile email system designed and promoted by Canadian company Research In Motion(RIM). It suppports email、mobile phone、word messages、internet facsimile, web browsing and other wireless information services. It was invented in 1998,when RIM’s strategist thought the squeezed small standard English black keybroad on the little wireless product looks like seeds on the surface of strawberry,he gave it a name – Blackberry. My first use of BlackBerry was in 2005 when I worked for Goldman.  Now, let’s take a look the uniqueness of BlackBerry new model 8800!

PRODUCT OUTLOOK    bb_8800_indigo

8800 is made by traditional Blackberry materials :black piano baking varnish with metal frame outside. With the first glace,8800 is very much like a big black pearl, but definitely more durable. 8800 is about 114mm x 66mm x 15mm,and 134g. It has a QWERTY keybroad,an ALT key that can quickly access information and a high resolution screen(320×240). It can automatically control brightness to provide excellent visibility under all circonstances,at the same time it saves batteries. The distance between its opposite angles on screen is 2.4".

All applications are easy-to-use and all operations can be done manually. Its navigation interface can be controlled by pressing the center button of the keybroad. The voice dail button is located on the right side, the phone jack and the mini USB connection are  on the left side. The power-on button and the mute/play/standby button are on the top of 8800. The MS card is under the back cover. If users wants to take out the card , it is no need to restart 8800. It is equipped with a leather carrying case,it can be put in the case when it is not in use. One thing is needed to be pointed out, under strong magnetic field ,it automatically turns itself to standby mode, and it will go back to normal mode under normal condition.

FUNCTIONS

  • Quad-Band: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS, EDGE + Wi-Fi. Did you say WiFi? Yes, WiFi.
  • 320×240 screen
  • 106mm x 60mm x 15.5mm. Whew, that’s certainly thinner than Paris.
  • USB Connection
  • Full QWERTY keypad. No more of that “SureType” crap.
  • Email and SMS
  • Organizer
  • Internet
  • Blackberry Maps
  • Possible on some versions of the 8800 (Camera – 1.3 mp, 5x digital zoom, flash and maybe even video recording)
  • Media Player
  • 64 MB Flash, expandable memory (Micro SD)
  • Advanced noise and echo cancellation
  • Voice activated dialing, speaker phone, Bluetooth 2.0

Like early-designed Blackberry products ,8800 has powerful communication function and efficient information transmission function. In terms of communication times,by far the longest conversation of GSM8800 is  4 h 50 mins. In term of battery life, it surpasses other similar products. In the late night, it can be switched off.

8800 has an highly advanced internal system, although its user interface looks very ordinary. It can save PIM data information such as Microsoft Outlook. In its telephone book, numbers and addresses can be saved in different categories. But it cannot save birthdays, this is a pity. All records from the first to the last can be found by keybroad operation. At the same time,it can show records in list form. 8800’s phone connection is very fast, any key on the keybroad can be speed dialer key.

8800 also supports some common functions,e.g. Bluetooth2.0 and USB connection. To secure driver’s safety,Bluetooth 2.0 can be used with Advanced Car Kit. 8800 can connect to PC for interface management.  Its data transmission is slower than EV-DO. More,it can transfer files from PC,upload music from PC,download the latest firmwares upgrade from the internet.

USER INTERFACE
desktop
8800’s user interface looks like that of MicrosoftWindows DOS. But  the screen cannot support Linux-based user interface at all. However
,it has certain advantages. For instanceit can connect to PC easily to realise further functions.  8800 provides an user-defined interface. It supports Autotext function, users can change the size of characters, even font, including black and Italics. There are about 100 themes avaiable in 8800,and background pictures on standby screen can be chnaged easily. The main menu,on 8800is very presentable. Different icons represent differenct functions, all icons can be shown or hiden.  Users can use “Show All” order to view file list.

TO SUM

I do think 8800 is an excellent mobile phone because its extremely easy-to-use interface and powerful communication functions. It is a state to art intelligent handset. Most importantly, its powerful word input scheme and newly-designed navigation menu bring us a freshing experience.

Chinese showbiz rarely produces icons. Sure, there are the dozen or so movie actors who can carry a film, and the odd rocker who fills a stadium. But seldom does a face on China‘s small screen really stand out. Which helps explain how a 21-year-old Sichuanese music student named Li Yuchun has become one of the most popular figures in China. In August 2005, Li won a televised American Idol-like singing contest produced by Hunan province’s Entertainment Channel and bearing its own inimitable name: "Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Super Girl’s Voice." (Its sponsor makes yogurt.) The show drew the largest audiences in the history of Chinese television.

The Li phenomenon, however, goes far beyond her voice, which even the most ardent fans admit is pretty weak: her vocal range drifts between Cher territory and that place your little brother’s voice went the summer before seventh grade. As a dancer, she’s not much better. Hei Nan, one of the event’s judges, told the Guangzhou Daily that Li was "the worst of the top six in terms of singing skills," but noted that she garnered the most audience votes.

What Li did possess was attitude, originality and a proud androgyny that defied Chinese norms. During the tryouts—in which 150,000 contestants were winnowed to 15—Li wore loose jeans and a black button-down shirt, with no make-up and the haircut (and body) of David Bowie during his Space Oddity phase. She auditioned with In My Heart There’s Only You, Never Her, an oldie made famous by Taiwan‘s Liu Wenzheng—a man. In the main competition she sang other songs written for male performers. For an audience reared on the bubble-gum, lip-gloss standards of Chinese girl pop, Li’s disregard for the rule book produced an unfamiliar knee-weakening. Her fans wept openly when Li took the stage.

Li’s victory was unusual in other ways: like American Idol, but unlike China itself, "Super Girl’s Voice" is run democratically. As Li prepares for a nationwide tour with the other finalists, her handlers are loath to discuss the political dimensions of the program or of Li’s triumph. Hunan Entertainment Channel refused TIME’s requests to interview Li. Her agents were worried the story would portray Li as more than just an entertainer. But she is more: Li represents unabashed individuality, and that’s why she’s a national icon.

G for Gooooogle

Google’s official birthday is in September 1998. If Google were a person, it would be 8 years old today and would have started elementary school two years ago. Today it would have just finished the second grade. In other words, Google’s just getting started.

tisp_logo_smtr_childrens_day07valentine07

Co-founders Larry E. Page and Sergey Brin have long declared Google’s mission is to "organize the world’s information." Google is moving to digitize the world’s libraries, to offer all comers free voice calls, to provide satellite images of the world, and perhaps to give away wireless broadband service to millions of people. Google really seems to believe it can make every bit of information available to anyone anywhere, and direct all those bits — whether text, audio, or video — through its computers before they hit users’ brains.

anzac_day07mothers_day07st_david07

One of the key reasons for Google’s success is a belief that good ideas can, and should, come from anywhere. Page and Brin insist that all engineers in the company have one day a week to work on their own pet projects. An ideas mailing list is open to anyone at Google who wants to post a proposal. What Mayer does is help figure out how to make sure good ideas bubble to the surface and get the attention they need. The task is becoming more complex as Google grows, with a workforce of 4,200 now and revenues on track to hit $3.7 billion this year.
